Hancel Biography
Hancel Panti, a native of San José Succotz in Belize, has been dedicated to the art of slate stone carving since the age of twelve. Inspired by a tradition passed down from his grandfather to his father, Juan, Hancel has carried this family passion into his own life and now shares it with his children, ensuring the craft continues for generations to come.
Growing up in a village deeply connected to Maya heritage and the artistry of nearby Xunantunich, Hancel transformed his hobby into his first job, using his skill to support his parents and siblings. His accomplishments also inspired his brothers, sisters, and cousins, who saw the value of slate stone art and began to share in the same passion. Over the years, his artistry has gained recognition in his community and beyond, admired for its beauty and cultural pride.
Today, slate carving is a family effort. With the support of his wife, Hancel’s sons help him collect, cut, and size the stones, while his daughters sand and wash each piece in preparation for his detailed carvings. Using the simplest of tools—a machete, sandpaper, a flat screwdriver, a compass, and shoe polish—Hancel creates works of art that shine with creativity and heritage.
Above all, Hancel is a proud husband and father of two daughters and two sons. He takes joy not only in passing on the tradition of slate carving but also in knowing that his art has provided for his family, given them a brighter future, and shared the spirit of Succotz with visitors from around the world.
